Mode und Fotografie sind eng miteinander verknüpft: ohne Bild keine Mode. In der Fotografie realisiert sich die mit der Mode verknüpfte idealisierte Vorstellung, zeigt sich gewissermaßen erst ihre Botschaft. Sie bedingen einander, und haben beide das Potential, unsere Wertvorstellungen zu prägen und zu erweitern. Mode ist oft ein Ausdruck von Identität.

In diesem Kurs beschäftigen wir uns mit den Konstruktionen des Selbst durch Mode und ihrer Darstellung im Medium der Fotografie. Im Verlauf des Semesters werden wir sowohl die Ikonen der Modefotografie kennenlernen, praktische und experimentelle Workshops im Fotostudio machen, als auch die visuelle und politische Rhetorik, die mit der Editorial- und Modeindustrie verbunden ist, kritisch reflektieren. Es geht auch um Fragen nach den Möglichkeiten der Dekolonisierung von Mode(fotografie), und nach ihrem aktivistischen Potential Menschenbilder und soziale Identitäten zu prägen. Im Verlauf des Semesters entwickeln Sie in kleinen Gruppen eigenen Fotostrecken, aus dem wir ein Magazin erstellen möchten.

Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung machen wir eine Exkursion nach Antwerpen & Brüssel (voraussichtlich 26.-28.11.22) und besuchen u.a. das Musée de la Photographie in Brüssel, das FOMU Fotomuseum Antwerpen, als auch die große Doppelausstellung ‚MIRROR MIRROR – Mode & die Psyche‘ im MoMu – ModeMuseum Antwerpen und im Museum Dr. Guislain in Gent. Diese untersucht die Verbindung zwischen Mode, Psychologie, Selbstbild und Identität.

Für das Beginn des Semesters ist ein gemeinsamer Praxis Workshop mit Studierenden der Fakultät Architektur zur Verbindung von Mode, Körper und ‚tragbarer‘ Architektur geplant. Wir wollen hierfür im Fotostudio mit Faltungen, Papier und Textilien experimentieren. (Kooperation mit Prof. Stefan Niese)

Fashion and photography are closely linked: without an image, there is no fashion. In photography, the idealized idea associated with fashion is realized, in a sense, its message is first revealed. They are mutually dependent, and both have the potential to shape and expand our ideas of value. Fashion is often an expression of identity.

In this course, we will explore constructions of the self through fashion and their representation in the medium of photography. Over the course of the semester, we will both learn about the icons of fashion photography, do hands-on and experimental workshops in the photo studio, and critically reflect on the visual and political rhetoric associated with the editorial and fashion industries. It also addresses questions about the possibilities of decolonizing fashion (photography), and its activist potential to shape images of people and social identities. Over the course of the semester, you will develop your own photo series in small groups, from which we hope to create a magazine.

As part of the course we will go on an excursion to Antwerp & Brussels and visit among others the Musée de la Photographie in Brussels, the FOMU Fotomuseum Antwerp, as well as the large double exhibition ‚MIRROR MIRROR – Fashion & the Psyche‘ at the MoMu – ModeMuseum Antwerp and the Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent. This explores the connection between fashion, psychology, self-image and identity.

For the beginning of the semester, a joint practice workshop with students of the Faculty of Architecture on the connection between fashion, body and ‚wearable‘ architecture is planned.
