(Re-)Thinking Photography: Narrative Strategien

Fotografische Praxis - Fortlaufendes Seminar

Das Seminar richtet sich an Studierende, die eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Medium der Fotografie suchen und subjektive fotografische Vorhaben umsetzen oder fortführen wollen. Im Zentrum der Lehre der Fotografie steht die Auffassung, dass Bilder und Bildermachen das Potential haben, Welt zu erkennen und dass man bei der Fotografie von einer eigenen Form des Denkens ausgehen kann. Und dass es insbesondere in Zeiten medialer Zuspitzung, immer auch um die eigene Haltung, um eine Ethik des Bildermachens gehen muss, sowie um die „Zumutung“, die Komplexität der Wirklichkeit nicht zu vereinfachen, sondern im Bild zu lassen.

In einer Atmosphäre kooperativen Lernens erarbeiten wir uns neben dem sukzessiven Erarbeiten der individuellen Projekte eine Bandbreite an fotografischen Sichtweisen, die von experimentellen Bildproduktionen bis hin zu dokumentarischen Narrativen reicht.

Eine besondere Konzentration liegt in diesem Sommersemester auf den Möglichkeiten der fotografischen Narration und dem Medium des Fotobuchs, und dem Fotozine. Hierzu gibt es am 27.4. ein Dienstagsgespräch über das Fotobuch mit Dr. Anja Schürmann (Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen); mit dem Titel: „Von schnellen und langsamen Seiten. Bewegung im Fotobuch“.

Desweiteren ist im Rahmen des Seminars ein Intensiv Workshop mit der Fotografin und Künstlerin Margret Hoppe, sowie eine Exkursion zur internationalen Fotografietriennale RAY 2021 Frankfurt / Rhein Main im Juni geplant.

(Re-)Thinking Photography ist ein fortlaufendes Format mit unterschiedlich gesetzten Schwerpunkten: es sind explizit auch Studierende aus dem Vorjahr eingeladen – wieder daran teilzunehmen.

The seminar is aimed at students who are looking for an intensive examination of the medium of photography and who want to implement or continue subjective photographic projects. At the center of the teaching of photography is the notion that images and image making have the potential to recognize the world and that one can assume one’s own form of thinking in photography. And that, especially in times of intensification in the media, it always has to be about one’s own attitude, about an ethic of image making, as well as about the „imposition“ of not simplifying the complexity of reality but leaving it in the picture.

In an atmosphere of cooperative learning, in addition to the successive development of individual projects, we develop a range of photographic perspectives, ranging from experimental image productions to documentary narratives.

A special focus this summer semester is on the possibilities of photographic narration and the medium of the photo book and the photo zine. There will be a Dienstagsgespräch on April 27th about the photo book with Dr. Anja Schürmann (Institute for Cultural Studies Essen); with the title: „Of fast and slow pages. Movement in the photo book“.

Furthermore, an intensive workshop with the photographer and artist Margret Hoppe, as well as an excursion to the international photography triennial RAY 2021 Frankfurt / Rhein Main in June and July are planned as part of the seminar.

(Re) thinking photography is an ongoing format with different emphases: students from the previous year are explicitly invited to take part again.
