Taking Sides

Design and Art between Autonomy and Intervention

International Symposium
20. – 21.5.22

Starting Point:

To what extent are status, potentials and functions of art and design currently changing? How are materials, media and topics intertwined when it comes to realizing these changes? How can artists and designers take a stand, how can they participate? Is the aesthetic autonomy of art and design under threat or are new possibilities for situating it emerging? How do current challenges affect the differences and similarities of art and design?

Thematic focus:

The present is characterized by profound processes of change, the speed of which seems to be increasing all the time. These processes are embedded in a tension field that is determined both by the existential threats of the Anthropocene and by a globally unfolding plurality of perspectives.

Both dynamics of change set established self-understandings in motion, which significantly affects art and design, too. As forms of generating aesthetic meaning and public practices, they claim technological achievements, react to crises, thematize and realize power relations, and raise public awareness of marginalized perspectives.

Event:

The symposium “Taking Sides. Design and Art between Autonomy and Intervention” will take this potential as a starting point to discuss to what extent art and design can, or perhaps even should, take sides and what this means for their relationship to each other. These questions will be concretized and worked out by referring to current social and political topics, to different artistic and designerly materialities and perspectives as well as by engaging in a dialogue between aesthetic theory and practice.

The topics and questions of the symposium will be worked upon in four panels and two podium debates. The national and international contributors are situated in the humanities, in design, art and photography.

The event is organized by Prof. Johanna Diehl and Dr. Judith-Frederike Popp

Realization:

  • The first panel pursues discussing the structures and conditions of production when it comes to aesthetic practices and concerns the question which technological, historical and social circumstances art and design draw upon.
  • The second panel discusses political dimensions of design against the background of the fact that this aesthetic practice intervenes in actual life realities and therefore has to acknowledge the question of responsibilities.
  • The third panel focuses on photography as a major intersection point between artistic-autonomous and designerly-applied perspectives. Against this background, questions of bearing witness and of intervention are discussed.
  • The fourth panel asks for the possibilities and limits of contemporary art to intervene in social and political matters in an activistic way. It will be discussed which implications regarding the autonomy of art might result from activist approaches.

The symposium focuses on an exchange between theory and practice as well as between different aesthetic disciplines. In order to promote this exchange, this event includes two discussion formats. Here, questions about the relations between art, design and photography as well as between autonomy and responsibility are discussed with all participants.

Catalogue

Taking Sides – Catalogue
An ongoing documentation of our joint working process

The symposium “Taking Sides” is accompanied by two seminars, one of which has taken place during winter semester 2021/22 and the other one is currently taking place during summer semester 2022. Together with the students, we worked out and further on work out research, readings, discussions and reflections that provided and provide both theoretical and practical grounds for individual design projects.

In order to bring together this mutual knowledge, we conceptualized and realized a catalogue, which includes both a glossary and a project overview.

The glossary gathers, explains and illustrates concepts and terms that provided relevant impulses for our examination of the topic “Design and Art between Autonomy and Intervention”.

The project overview presents the artistic and design perspectives and positions of the seminar participants. Over the course of the symposium, the catalogue will be complemented by contributions of the guests. It is therefore designed to be continued.
