Photography in Transition

Photography as a Medium

We examine the development of photography and visual culture in the context of current social and technological changes. The focus is on contemporary issues relating to the documentation of people and the environment, fashion, everyday culture and visual representation in popular culture. Over the course of the semester, participants develop an independent photographic project that can encompass classic analogue black-and-white techniques as well as digital processes, moving image formats or interactive installations; projects can be realised individually or in small groups.

In addition, current impulses from image theory are taken into account: The course addresses AI-generated images, algorithmic image practices and the role of collective image practices. The effects of platforms, data economy and social control in the digital space, as well as questions of authenticity and new visual worlds, are critically discussed. Reflections are expanded by looking ahead to future technologies such as quantum imaging and the technical visualisation of internal states. The aim is to engage in research-based and practice-oriented exploration of photography at the interface of theory, artistic implementation and social significance.
