past futures – future pasts
Spaces of memory, temporatlities and possibilities
»The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens.«
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet, 1904
The past is not over. It continues to have an impact – in stories, images, architecture, routines and conflicts. The future is not abstract. It is imagined, narratively designed and prepared for through concrete actions – and at the same time is based on what remains, is remembered or is deliberately ignored.
In this course, we explore the relationship between history, memory and future possibilities. We ask: What remains? What is activated, transformed or reinterpreted? What futures were laid out in past moments – and what past are we producing today for tomorrow?
Choose your own starting point for your project – whether it be historical research, untold stories, archive material or your personal experiences. Public spaces offer a possible field of work in which collective and individual memories are inscribed – private life can also be a starting point. The creative concept helps to navigate between the past and the future.
The results can be realised as participatory interventions, spatial installations, hybrid or multimedia formats. The choice of media and design techniques is completely up to you.
The accompanying programme is an integrated part of the course: city walks, exchanges with archives and inputs on urban sociology as well as memory culture are linked to the project processes. An excursion to museums and exhibitions in Munich provides an opportunity to gain new perspectives on the relationship between space, time and memory.
Questions about the course will be answered on 10 March 2026 from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
