Archipelagos of Resistance

German Photo Book Award Bronze: Publication by Prof. Johanna Diehl

For her series ARCHIPELAGOS OF RESISTANCE, Johanna Diehl traveled to Sarajevo several times between 2021 and 2024 and photographed places and spaces where exhibitions, theater productions, film festivals, and concerts took place in the 1990s. During the Bosnian War and the siege of the city, many of these venues were used as media centers, such as the Holiday Inn hotel and the BHRT building (Bosnia and Herzegovina Radio and Television building). Despite life-threatening circumstances, cultural life flourished in these “islands of resistance” scattered throughout Sarajevo. They enabled the world to follow life in the besieged city.

Her images illustrate the power and importance of cultural work, especially in war zones and times of crisis. With this series and her earlier work, she explores the cultural identity of today’s Europe. A book that sheds new light on the life-affirming, vital importance of culture and art in times of budget cuts! The project was created as part of an Ifa traveling exhibition. Learn more

The publication was awarded bronze in the documentary photography category at the German Photo Book Award 2025/26. Learn more
