Shortly after the publication of
Marcus Kaiser’s book “Im Blick der Bilder. Digitality, photography and image culture”, we are taking it as an opportunity to continue the discussions held with communication scientist Mario Donick. These are based on Kaiser’s artistic research work on and through the medium of the image. The student perspective on contemporary processes, which Marcus Kaiser closely follows in his teaching of photography and the history and theory of photography, can also be recognised as an important stimulus.
The ongoing examination of contemporary image politics and cultures in Marcus Kaiser’s work provides us with an object of reflection on which we can clarify questions of the historicity of images, the construction and control of identity via images and the apparative image (from the camera obscura to AI-generated visualities).
The book can bring together the most important threads of contemporary image theory and provide a current perspective, also with regard to the role of meta-images and artificial intelligence. In conversation, Kaiser also shows how strongly artistic and creative practice can be research practice and how this can provide access to scientific questions, which vividly illustrates the explosive nature of the discussions taking place in art and science.
Postscript:
Marcus Kaiser enriched the audience with a lecture on his book ‘Im Blick der Bilder’. He provided insights into his personal career and explained how the idea for this work came about. The conversation with Christoph Naumann-Zimmer was particularly interesting, with the two of them passionately discussing the book’s content and questions, enriching the event with many new impressions.
