Preserve and develop

From tradition to innovation

“The task of modernity is not to discard the old, but to give it a new voice.”
Umberto Eco

In an age in which so much is being digitized, automated, and dematerialized, the question arises as to what analog things, practices, and experiences we want to preserve. Books, games, tools, instruments, and everyday objects possess qualities that are often lost through pure digitization – tactility, materiality, aura, history.

The exciting thing is not simply to transfer these analog things and experiences into the digital realm, but to deepen and thus improve them through digital enhancements. It’s about making added value visible, opening up new levels, and telling inspiring stories. “Preserving” here means valuing the analog, maintaining it, and enriching it through digital design.

In this event, we will creatively explore this area of tension and examine how the fruitful and meaningful interplay between the analog and the digital can give rise to new and surprising experiences. Choose an object, a game, a book, or another example of your choice and combine the tried and tested with the new to create something special.

Six students from the Digital Business Systems program are expected to participate in this event, so individual and group work will be possible.

Programming skills are not essential. However, we recommend taking either the TP “Processing” or the TP “Physical Computing” course by Manuel Michel to get sufficient support in implementing your project. ChatGPT will take care of the rest.
