Typography in études (A)

Typography Basics Group A

Venturing into typography and into the world of visual language reveals a vast body of knowledge waiting to be discovered. Much like learning a foreign language, we begin by familiarising ourselves with new vocabulary and the corresponding visual grammar. Through a series of études spread across the semester, we explore typographic dimensions, ranging from the smallest unit (the point or pixel) to the overall format, while browsing type specimens, exploring various type genres and typefaces, and gaining insights into how they are created. We will also examine relevant tools and historical developments. You will experiment—almost playfully—with typographic parameters, treating them as a cohesive, flexible visual system.

Above all, this semester is about getting to know each another. Curiosity and enthusiasm are the ideal prerequisites for this course.
