Uncanny Valley

Digital horror fascination

There are limits to the acceptance of human-like technologies. If representations, avatars or robots appear or behave too humanistically, their acceptance among us humans drops significantly and sometimes frightens us. This phenomenon, known as the “Uncanny Valley”, has been known since the 1970s and is becoming increasingly important against the backdrop of ever-improving technologies and the rapid development of AI tools.

This semester, we want to look at the “scary moments” of digital phenomena. When does a representation tip over into the unpleasant, when are boundaries crossed and how can we influence this phenomenon? What role do human-like appearances play, how relevant are movements, language and AI?

This project allows a broad creative approach. Simple graphics can deliver equally strong results as realistic renderings, photo and film sequences or even objects. We tinker, experiment and design – and learn a lot about how we humans deal with digitality in the process.
