Sonic Space

Multisensory Concepts for Spaces

In this course, we explore the interplay between space, design, sound, and perception. Sound and auditory elements can be used in complex ways as design materials to create atmospheres, provide orientation, direct attention, or trigger interaction. In this context, other design elements — such as spatial features, materials, light, or movement — may also stand out.

Sound, noise, and speech operate on two levels: as atmospheric elements that imbue a space with mood, and visually and spatially as auditory tools for communication that narrate, explain, or make content tangible. The extent to which these two roles merge or remain separate within a concept will become evident in your projects. Silence and the inaudible can also play a role here.

Your project will also have the opportunity to be presented to the public. Under the theme “SIGNAL – NOISE,” we are participating in the open call for a small pavilion at the Music Creative Business Week (mcbw/bayern design) in Munich and submitting a conceptual proposal. Following submission, the ideas will be further developed depending on the outcome—either for the public installation or as a standalone spatial work. The concept will be finalized within the framework of this course and, if selected for implementation, realized in the summer of 2027.

The result could be, for example, a sound-producing object, a spatial installation with auditory elements, or an exhibition unit with listening stations—which can optionally be integrated into the pavilion’s overall concept. Depending on the scope, the project will be built at a 1:1 scale, presented as a model, or simulated virtually. Teamwork is strongly encouraged. A one-day field trip to museums and exhibitions is also planned to provide inspiration.

Questions about the course will be answered via Zoom on September 22 at 3:00 p.m.:
