Einführung in fotografisches Arbeiten

Grundlage dieses Kurses sind die quadratischen Felder eines Standard Stadtplans. Dieses Quadrat dient jeweils als Ausgangspunkt, um literarische und fotografische Erkundungen des urbanen Raums vorzunehmen und sich in fotografischen Projekten mit Architektur, Mode, sozialem Raum und Stadt zu beschäftigen. Im Verlauf der Projektarbeit lernen wir verschiedene fotografische Strategien und Positionen kennen und setzen uns intensiv mit grundlegenden Bereichen der Fotografie, wie Street Photography, Mode-, Portrait- und Architekturfotografie, Essay/Reportage auseinander. Wir machen Recherchen in digitalen und analogen Archiven, um die Schichten hinter dem Sichtbaren freizulegen und erarbeiten uns fotografische Verfahrens- und Präsentationstechniken.

Vom 23.-26.3.2023 findet eine Exkursion nach Berlin zum European Month of Photography statt, mit spannenden Ausstellungen, Führungen und gemeinsamen Abenden am Freitag und Samstag. Der Sonntag ist explizit als Workshop-Tag zum Fotografieren in einem gewählten Planquadrat in Berlin angelegt – und steht im Dialog zu den Fotografien des Planquadrats in Würzburg, das im Verlauf des Semesters entstehen wird.

Eine Herausforderung besteht darin, ausgehend von dem Lokalen etwas über unsere Gegenwart im Allgemeinen mit den Mitteln der Fotografie zu erzählen. Die individuelle Themenfindung wird in diesem Kurs gefördert: denkbar ist eine konzentrierte Beobachtung von Architektur, die Dokumentation eines bedeutsamen Ortes, das Erarbeiten einer Portraitserie, Text Bild Kombinationen, das Einbinden von literarischen Texten, aber auch das Erstellen eines Fashion-Zines, einer Food-Strecke oder eines journalistischen Essays mit Bezug zu dem gewählten Planquadrat.

The basis of this course is the square fields of a standard city map. This square serves in each case as a starting point to undertake literary and photographic explorations of urban space and to engage in photographic projects with architecture, fashion, social space and the city. In the course of the project work we get to know different photographic strategies and positions and deal intensively with fundamental areas of photography, such as street photography, fashion, portrait and architectural photography, essay/reportage. We do research in digital and analog archives to uncover the layers behind the visible and work out photographic process and presentation techniques.

From 23-26.3.2023 there will be an excursion to Berlin for the European Month of Photography, with exciting exhibitions, guided tours and joint evenings on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is explicitly designed as a workshop day for photographing in a chosen plan square in Berlin – and is in dialogue with the photographs of the plan square in Würzburg, which will be created in the course of the semester.

One challenge is to use the means of photography to tell something about our present in general, starting from the local. The individual choice of topics is encouraged in this course: a concentrated observation of architecture, the documentation of a significant place, the creation of a portrait series, text-image combinations, the inclusion of literary texts, but also the creation of a fashion zine, a food spread or a journalistic essay with reference to the chosen plan square is conceivable.
