Schönheit der Form
Fundamentals of object design

»What attracts people at first is the form, i.e. the beauty. If it comes to me and touches me, then I am interested in this object.« – Christa Petroff-Bohne (1)
Three short-term projects are used to introduce the basics and concepts of object design and to test them in the design process.
We will deconstruct three-dimensional objects in their proportions, cross-sections, textures and compositions, discuss them and finally develop three-dimensional shapes ourselves. Special attention will be given to analog design procedures and thus sensory-immediate ways of working in different materials (such as cardboard, clay and hard foam) and corresponding techniques. Digital approaches such as 3D modelling (Fusion 360), 3D scanning and 3D printing will be selectively highlighted. The exercises are accompanied by insights into the positions of historical and contemporary designers. Confidence in dealing with proportions is just as much a goal of the semester as the careful execution and high-quality presentation of one’s own designs.
I will be happy to answer questions about the course on Monday, 11.03.25 between 16:00 – 17:00 at my Zoom.
