Illustration
In illustration, we make pictures by hand. This gives each of our works a special aesthetic quality. The traces of our activity create a tangible counterpart for the viewers of our works. This gives our pictures a human dimension. We can depict the entire range of our emotions and attitudes. Our virtuosity, strength, anger, dedication, vulnerability and also our failures become legible. This distinguishes the illustration from the stochastic ejections of artificial intelligence.
By emphasizing authorship and through their strong symbolic aesthetics, illustrations succeed in playfully overcoming many of the current social dichotomies. They can easily eliminate the differences between feminine and masculine, general and individual, and between high and popular culture. Illustration thus becomes not only a means of aesthetic visualization, but also a cultural bridge that is able to depict the diversity of human experience and the complexity and contradictions of our society.
